Chapter Six

“If you paint your pumpkin yellow like this, then you can draw on some eyes and some brown pants and he'll look just like Spongebob Squarepants,” I said to a gathered crowd of children at the pumpkin patch. They giggled happily as I added the finishing touches to my pumpkin. “Who wants this pumpkin?” I asked to a shouting group of kids who all replied, “Me! Me! Me!” Phoenix and I giggled.

One little girl pointed at Phoenix. “Why doesn't he paint a pumpkin?” she asked innocently. I smiled because she thought Phoenix was a boy.

“He doesn't like to paint,” I said to her. She was only about four-years-old and cute as a button in her frilly white and pink dress and matching shoes. “But what we can do is get some paint and paint her face. Wouldn't that be fun?” Phoenix shook her head 'no' while the little girl nodded her head 'yes.'

“I knew you would think that was fun. Now pick out some colors,” I said to her. She brought over some plastic bowls that had blue, red, and white paint. “Red, white, and blue, great choices,” I said. “Now tell our subject to sit down.”

“Sit down!” said the little girl. The other kids laughed and a few of the parents watched closely to see what I was going to paint.

“First, we're going to paint her face white so that whatever we draw stands out on her face.” I took the paint and smeared it on Phoenix's face. She looked annoyed, but I was glad she was being a good sport. I imagined that she would make a good parent one day. “Then we're going to take this red paint and draw something right here on her left cheek. What do you think we should draw?”

“A flower!” shouted the girl. I was surprised to have kept her attention for so long.

“A flower. Okay, how about one like this,” I said as I painted a red rose on Phoenix's cheek.

“Yay!” shouted the girl.

“What should we draw on the other side with this blue paint?” I asked again.

“A flower!” shouted the girl. Phoenix laughed.

“Another flower. Okay, how's this?” I asked as I drew a blue bonnet on her other cheek.

“You're a lovely artist,” said the girl's mother.

“Thank you,” I said. “It's a hobby of mine.”

“Who all is ready for the hay maze?” announced the minister. “It's just about ready.”

“Yay!” shouted the screaming children. They ran over to the maze leaving us full of paint. I wiped my hands and Phoenix sat there with her face drying.

“How do I look?” she asked.

“Like a clown with flowers on her face. Do you want me to paint your nose red?” I asked laughing.

“How do I wash this stuff off?” she asked.

“You don't. I don't think this is face paint.”

“What!? How long do I have to stay like this?”

“Aw, don't be a complainer. I'm sure it will wash out. Let's go to the hay maze,” I said giggling. I ran towards the maze.

“Let me paint on your face and see how you like it,” said Phoenix, chasing after me.
